Three weeks is the magic number for New Zealand. It's enough time to cover both islands properly — the geothermal North Island and the dramatic South Island — without feeling rushed. This day-by-day itinerary is designed for international visitors arriving in Auckland and departing from Christchurch (or vice versa), avoiding backtracking and expensive one-way car hire fees by using the InterIslander ferry between islands. Make sure you have travel insurance and a rental car sorted before you arrive.

Practical Tips
- One-way car hire: Picking up in Auckland and dropping off in Christchurch (or vice versa) often incurs a $100–$300 one-way fee. Compare on DiscoverCars — some companies waive it seasonally.
- InterIslander ferry: Book ahead in summer. Takes 3.5 hours, stunning scenery through the Marlborough Sounds. You can take your rental car on board ($200–$350 for car + passengers).
- Don't over-plan: 3 weeks feels long but goes fast. Build in 2–3 flex days for weather delays, spontaneous detours, or just resting.
- eSIM: Get an eSIM with enough data for 3 weeks. Saily (10% off) or Holafly unlimited (5% off with code NEWZEALANDATOZ) are best for longer trips.
- Budget: Use our trip cost calculator for a personalised estimate.
