📍 Mackenzie Country, South Island 🕐 1–2 days ⛰ 3,724m — NZ's highest peak
Aoraki Mt Cook is the centrepiece of the Southern Alps — New Zealand's highest peak at 3,724 metres, surrounded by 23 other peaks over 3,000m, the country's longest glacier, and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on earth. The drive in along the turquoise shores of Lake Pukaki is one of the great reveals in New Zealand travel — glacial flour suspended in the water gives the lake an impossible milky blue colour, and the mountain rises white and enormous at the end of the valley. Mt Cook Village is tiny (population about 200) but it punches well above its weight with world-class walks, glacier boat tours, scenic flights, and what is officially one of the best stargazing locations on the planet.

Things to Do
🚶
Hooker Valley Track
One of New Zealand's most popular day walks and arguably the most scenic easy walk in the country. 10 km return (3 hours) through alpine grassland, across three swing bridges, past Mueller Lake, to Hooker Lake with views of Aoraki the entire way. Flat and well-formed — suitable for most fitness levels. Free. Note: As of 2025, the track is partially closed for bridge replacement. Check DOC for updates — expected to fully reopen autumn 2026.
Must Do
🌊
Glacier Explorers
NZ's only glacial lake boat tour. Cruise the turquoise Tasman Glacier Lake weaving between icebergs that have calved from the face of the Tasman Glacier — NZ's longest at 23 km. The lake only formed in 1989 and is still expanding. Allow 2.75 hours total including a 1.5 km walk to the jetty. Sep–May only. ~$219 adult, $99 child (4–14). Departs from the Hermitage Hotel.

⭐
Stargazing
Mt Cook Village sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve — one of the largest and darkest certified reserves in the world. On a clear night, the Milky Way is overwhelming. Free to do yourself (just walk away from village lights), or book a Big Sky Stargazing guided tour from the Hermitage with telescopes and a planetarium session.

Scenic Flights
See the glaciers, peaks and the Tasman Valley from above. Helicopter flights from Mt Cook Village offer glacier landings where you step out onto the snow. Ski-plane flights cross the Main Divide to the West Coast glaciers and back. INFLITE Experiences runs the Aerial Explorer (~30 min). Expect to pay $300–$600+ depending on duration and glacier landing.
Scenic
🚣
Glacier Kayaking
Paddle among icebergs on Tasman Glacier Lake. Small group guided tours (max ~8 people) with Southern Alps Guiding, departing from Old Mountaineers Cafe in the village. Seasonal (Oct–Apr). A more intimate alternative to the Glacier Explorers boat. You get closer to the icebergs and it's quieter.
Adventure
🏛️
Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre
A museum inside the Hermitage Hotel celebrating NZ's most famous mountaineer, who trained on these mountains before summiting Everest in 1953. Exhibits on alpine history, a 3D cinema, and a planetarium. Good for rainy days — and it rains here often.

⛰ Book Mt Cook Experiences
Glacier tours, scenic flights and stargazing — book ahead in summer as capacity is limited.
Mt Cook Village is about 4 hours from Christchurch and 3.5 hours from Queenstown, making it the natural midpoint between the two on a South Island road trip. The drive from Christchurch passes through the Canterbury Plains, Geraldine, and the spectacular Mackenzie Country to Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. From Queenstown, you come via Cromwell and Lindis Pass. Both drives are beautiful. The final 55 km stretch along Lake Pukaki into the village is unforgettable — the turquoise water and mountain views will make you pull over repeatedly.
InterCity buses run from Christchurch and Queenstown. There's also the Cook Connection shuttle from Lake Tekapo. No flights into the village — you need wheels or a bus.
Where to Stay
The Hermitage Hotel is the icon — over 100 years old, with floor-to-ceiling mountain views from the restaurant and rooms. It's also where Glacier Explorers and stargazing tours depart from. Not cheap, but unforgettable. Aoraki Court Motel is the more affordable option in the village. White Horse Hill Campground (DOC, $15/night) is basic but beautifully located at the start of the Hooker Valley Track. There's also the YHA Mt Cook backpackers.
⚠️
Accommodation is very limited. Mt Cook Village has fewer than 300 beds total. In summer it books out weeks ahead. Book early or stay in Twizel (45 min) or Lake Tekapo (1 hour) and day-trip in. Twizel has good motels at much lower prices.
Practical Tips
Weather changes fast. Mt Cook has its own microclimate and can be cloudy or raining even when the rest of the Mackenzie is sunny. Bring layers and rain gear regardless of the forecast. If it's clear when you arrive, do the outdoor activities first — it might not last.
Kea alert. The world's only alpine parrot lives here and they are notorious thieves. Don't leave food, shoes, or car parts (especially rubber seals) unattended. They will dismantle anything they can reach.
Lake Pukaki lookout: Stop at the southern end of the lake at the Mt Cook viewing point. The turquoise water with the mountain behind is the postcard shot of the South Island.
Pair with Lake Tekapo: Only 1 hour south, Lake Tekapo has the Church of the Good Shepherd, Mt John Observatory, and more stargazing. Most people do both in the same trip.
