7-Day South Island Itinerary — The Classic Road Trip

Seven days is enough to see the South Island's greatest hits — just. This road trip itinerary takes you from Christchurch through the turquoise lakes of the Mackenzie Country, into the adventure capital of Queenstown, out to the drama of Milford Sound, up through Wānaka and over to the glaciers of the West Coast before looping back. It's roughly 1,600 km of driving — averaging 3–4 hours per day — through some of the most spectacular scenery on Earth.

Before you go: Sort your eSIM before you fly — you'll need data for navigation, bookings and weather checks throughout the South Island. Many areas have limited coverage, so download offline maps too. See our eSIM guide.

You'll need a rental car or campervan. Fly into and out of Christchurch (or do Queenstown to Christchurch one-way). Use our fuel calculator to estimate costs.

Day 1: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo

230 km, ~3 hours driving. Head south on SH1 then inland through the Canterbury Plains. Stop at Lake Tekapo — the impossibly blue glacial lake with the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd. Walk up Mt John for panoramic views (1 hour return), and if you're staying overnight, book the Dark Sky Experience — Tekapo is a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve and the stargazing is extraordinary.

Day 2: Lake Tekapo to Mt Cook to Queenstown

330 km total, ~4.5 hours driving. Drive along Lake Pukaki (stop at the viewpoint — the turquoise water with Aoraki/Mt Cook behind is unforgettable) to Mt Cook Village. Walk the Hooker Valley Track (10 km return, 3–4 hours, flat) — one of New Zealand's best day walks, ending at a glacial lake beneath the mountain. Then continue south through the Mackenzie Country to Queenstown. Arrive for a late dinner on the waterfront.

Day 3: Queenstown

A full day in the adventure capital. Options: Shotover Jet, bungy jumping, Skyline Gondola and luge, the Remarkables, wine tasting in Gibbston Valley, or simply stroll the waterfront and soak it in. If you want something quieter, drive 45 minutes to historic Arrowtown for lunch and a walk through the Chinese settlement. Book Queenstown activities in advance during peak season.

Day 4: Queenstown to Milford Sound

287 km each way, ~4.5 hours. An early start for the drive to Milford Sound. Stop at Mirror Lakes, The Chasm and the Homer Tunnel. Take a 2-hour Milford Sound cruise — Mitre Peak, waterfalls, dolphins and seals. Return to Queenstown or stay in Te Anau to break up the drive. Can't decide between Milford and Doubtful? Day 5: Queenstown to Wānaka to Fox/Franz Josef

330 km, ~4.5 hours. Head to Wānaka via the Crown Range road (spectacular views). Stop in Wānaka for a lakefront coffee, then continue over the Haast Pass — one of New Zealand's great alpine drives — through World Heritage rainforest to the West Coast. Arrive at Fox or Franz Josef Glacier. If time allows, do the Franz Josef glacier valley walk (1.5 hours return, free).

Day 6: West Coast to Arthur's Pass

250 km, ~3.5 hours. Head north along the wild West Coast. Stop at Hokitika Gorge (vivid turquoise water, short walk) and Punakaiki Pancake Rocks (free, 20-minute loop). Continue to Arthur's Pass — a dramatic alpine crossing through the Southern Alps. If you have time, walk to Devil's Punchbowl waterfall (1 hour return). Stay in Arthur's Pass village or continue to Springfield.

Day 7: Arthur's Pass to Christchurch

150 km, ~2 hours. A relaxed final morning driving through the Canterbury foothills back to Christchurch. Stop at Castle Hill (massive limestone boulders in an alpine setting — a sacred Māori site) and the Sheffield pie shop. Arrive in Christchurch by lunch for your flight, or spend the afternoon exploring the rebuilt city centre, the Botanic Gardens and the Avon River.

Budget estimate: For two people sharing a rental car and mid-range accommodation: ~NZ$400/day ($200pp) including car, fuel, accommodation and activities. Campervan travellers can do it for $150–200/day total. Use our budget calculator for a detailed breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for the South Island?

Seven days covers the major highlights — Lake Tekapo, Mt Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Wānaka, glaciers and Arthur's Pass. You'll be driving 3–4 hours most days. If you have 10–14 days, you can add Dunedin, the Catlins, Abel Tasman and Kaikōura for a more relaxed pace. See our 14-day itinerary for the extended version.

Should I start in Christchurch or Queenstown?

Either works. Christchurch has more international flight options and is a natural starting point heading south. Queenstown is more dramatic on arrival but means backtracking. A one-way rental (Christchurch pickup, Queenstown drop-off or vice versa) avoids doubling back — check if your car hire company charges a one-way fee.

What's the best time of year for a South Island road trip?

December to March offers the warmest weather and longest days, but is also peak season with higher prices and crowds. March–April (autumn) is quieter with stunning colours. The Milford Road can close in winter due to avalanche risk. Shoulder months (October–November, April–May) offer good value.
