Taupō sits on the edge of the largest lake in New Zealand — and directly on top of one of the most powerful volcanic zones on earth. Lake Taupō itself was formed by a massive eruption around 26,500 years ago, and a further eruption in 186 AD was one of the most violent in the last 5,000 years, recorded as far away as China and Rome. Today, the volcanic energy that created this landscape fuels hot pools, geothermal walks and the dramatic scenery that makes the region one of the North Island's best destinations. Think of it as a quieter, more relaxed version of Queenstown — with lake views, adventure activities, world-class trout fishing and the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing just 90 minutes down the road.

Things to Do

🌊
Huka Falls
New Zealand's most visited natural attraction. The Waikato River narrows into a volcanic rock ravine and erupts over an 11-metre drop at a rate of 220,000 litres per second — enough to fill an Olympic pool in under 11 seconds. Free to visit, multiple lookout points, and a bridge right at the top. Easy 15-minute walk from the car park. Absolutely spectacular.

Skydiving
Taupō is the skydiving capital of New Zealand. Jump from up to 16,500 ft with views of Lake Taupō, snow-capped volcanoes and coast-to-coast North Island scenery. Taupo Tandem Skydiving (25+ years, 200,000+ jumps) is the original operator. Free pickups from town. 9,000 ft from ~$299, 15,000 ft from ~$449. Qualmark Gold rated.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing
One of the world's greatest day hikes — 19.4 km across active volcanic terrain through the Mordor landscapes of Lord of the Rings. Emerald Lakes, Red Crater, Blue Lake and sweeping views. About 90 minutes' drive from Taupō. Allow 7–8 hours. Shuttle services run from Taupō. Not to be attempted in bad weather — check conditions.

🚢
Hukafalls Jet
A 30-minute jet boat ride up the Waikato River to the base of Huka Falls. You get right up close to the thundering falls plus 360-degree spins and speeds up to 80 km/h through narrow canyons. Around $108 adult. Family tickets available. One of the most popular jet boat rides in NZ.
Adventure
Hot Pools
Taupō DeBretts Spa Resort is the pick — natural geothermal hot pools, warm mineral pools, hydroslides for kids, and private pools. Open daily. The Tokaanu Thermal Pools (50 min south, near Turangi) are a quieter, more natural option with a free geothermal walk alongside.

🎣
Māori Rock Carvings
Massive carvings on the cliff face at Mine Bay, accessible only by water. Take a kayak, cruise or boat tour to see the 10-metre-tall carvings created in the late 1970s by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell. The Ernest Kemp cruise or a guided kayak tour are the best ways to visit.

🎣
Craters of the Moon
An otherworldly geothermal landscape of steam vents, bubbling mud and craters. Easy 45-minute loop walk with an optional 20-minute extension for better views. 8 km from town. Small entry fee (~$8 adult). The landscape is relatively new — formed by human settlement altering the geothermal field.
Easy Walk
💧
Aratiatia Rapids
A dam-controlled section of the Waikato River. The dam gates open at 10am, 12pm and 2pm (plus 4pm in summer), releasing a dramatic torrent of water through a narrow gorge. Free to watch from the viewing platforms. Get there 10 minutes early for the best spot. One of the best free things to do in the region.

Taupō + Rotorua combo: Taupō and Rotorua are only an hour apart. Most visitors do both — geothermal in Rotorua, adventure and lake in Taupō. Allow 2 days for each. If you're coming from Auckland, you can add Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton for the ultimate North Island loop.

It's 3.5 hours south of Auckland, 1 hour south of Rotorua, and 4.5 hours north of Wellington. The town has a small airport with Air New Zealand flights from Auckland. Where to Stay

Taupō has excellent accommodation at every level. The lakefront strip has motels and hotels with lake views. For budget travellers, the hostels are good and the Top 10 Holiday Park is well-positioned. For a splurge, Huka Lodge is one of New Zealand's most famous luxury lodges — set on the banks of the Waikato River with views you won't forget.

⚠️
Book the Tongariro Crossing shuttle early. In summer, the shuttles and car park fill up fast. Book your shuttle transfer from Taupō at least a few days ahead. Check weather conditions on the morning — the crossing is exposed alpine terrain and gets closed in bad weather. Don't risk it if conditions are marginal.
