Half a million people a year come to a tiny village in the Waikato to look at worms. And honestly, they should. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are one of New Zealand's most iconic natural attractions — a network of ancient limestone caves lit by thousands of bioluminescent glowworms that create the illusion of a galaxy on the ceiling above you. You can see them gently by boat, or you can get properly stuck in with black water rafting, abseiling into underground rivers, and floating through pitch-dark caves on an inner tube. Either way, it's unlike anything else you'll do on your trip.

The Caves
✨Waitomo Glowworm Cave
The classic experience. A 45-minute guided walking tour through limestone formations, stalactites and stalagmites, finishing with a silent boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto where thousands of glowworms light up the ceiling like a starry sky. The Cathedral cavern has acoustics so good that Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and the Vienna Boys Choir have performed here. Around $55 adult. Multiple departures daily. Check in 30 min before. The most accessible option — suitable for all ages.
Must Do
🕳Ruakuri Cave
A 2-hour walking tour through NZ's longest guided underground experience — 1.6 km of a 7.5 km system. You descend through a dramatic 15-metre spiral entrance into vast caverns with glowworms, underground streams and waterfalls, and intricate limestone structures. Reopened in 2005 after extensive engineering. Full wheelchair and pushchair access. Around $75 adult. Limited to 18 people per tour.
Accessible
🌊Black Labyrinth
The original black water rafting adventure. 3 hours of wetsuit-clad madness — jump backwards off underground waterfalls, float through pitch-black caves on an inner tube under a sky of glowworms, and crawl through spaces you didn't think you'd fit through. All gear provided. Finishes with hot showers and soup. Around $170 adult. Ages 12+. No prior caving experience needed, but you need reasonable fitness.
Adventure
🧗Black Abyss
The full 5-hour underground experience for adrenaline seekers. Everything in the Black Labyrinth plus a 35-metre abseil into the cave, a flying fox (zipline) through glowworm-studded darkness, and climbing up underground waterfalls. Around $290 adult. Ages 16+. The most intense Waitomo experience — not for the faint-hearted but an absolute rush.
Extreme
🌄Aranui Cave
The quietest and most delicate of the three main caves, steeped in Māori myth and legend. Named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Māori man who first explored it. Stunning limestone formations in high chambers. A gentler experience than the other options. Around $55 adult.

🌟Combo Deals
Save by combining caves. The most popular combo is Glowworm Cave + Ruakuri Cave. There are also combos with Aranui Cave, and packages that include the Ruakuri Bushwalk or zipline canopy tour. Check the Discover Waitomo website for current deals — savings of 15–20% are common on multi-cave combos.

💡Which one should you do? If you only have time for one: the Glowworm Cave boat tour is the classic and works for everyone including young kids. If you want to actually get in the water: the Black Labyrinth is one of the most unique adventure experiences in New Zealand. If you're a serious adrenaline seeker: the Black Abyss is unforgettable. If you want the best cave without getting wet: Ruakuri is arguably the most impressive cave system.

✨ Book Waitomo Caves
Pre-booking is essential for all caves and experiences. These sell out in peak season.
Getting There
Waitomo is in the western Waikato, about 2.5 hours south of Auckland, 2 hours from Rotorua, and just 1 hour from Hobbiton. The Hobbiton–Waitomo combo is one of the most popular day trips in the North Island. If you're driving yourself, SH3 runs straight through. InterCity buses also service Waitomo from Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua.
🌟The Hobbiton + Waitomo combo: These two attractions are only an hour apart, making it possible to do both in one big day. Many tour operators run Auckland–Hobbiton–Waitomo day trips. If driving yourself, do Hobbiton in the morning (tours start at 9am) and Waitomo in the afternoon. Both pre-book — don't leave it to chance.
Practical Tips
- Pre-book everything. The visitor centre is a cashless site. Tours depart on schedule and if you're late, your ticket is forfeited.
- Check in 30 minutes early. This is enforced — arrive with time to spare.
- For black water rafting: Bring swimwear, a towel, and a change of clothes. All caving gear (wetsuit, gumboots, helmet, headlamp, tube) is provided. Hot showers and soup available after.
- Fitness requirements for Black Labyrinth: You must be able to step up 50cm, climb onto a 1m object, climb a ladder, and walk uphill for 10 minutes — all unaided. Weight range 45–130 kg.
- No photography inside the caves. On black water rafting tours, guides take photos which are available for purchase afterwards.
- What are glowworms? They're the larvae of the fungus gnat (Arachnocampa luminosa), found only in New Zealand and parts of Australia. The larva produces a soft greenish light from luminescent organs, and hangs sticky threads from cave ceilings to catch insects attracted by the glow. The hungrier the worm, the brighter the light.
