Three weeks is the magic number for New Zealand. It's enough time to cover both islands properly — the geothermal North Island and the dramatic South Island — without feeling rushed. This day-by-day itinerary is designed for international visitors arriving in Auckland and departing from Christchurch (or vice versa), avoiding backtracking and expensive one-way car hire fees by using the InterIslander ferry between islands. Make sure you have travel insurance and a rental car sorted before you arrive.
