The Route

Head south from Auckland on the Southern Motorway (SH1). The first hour is motorway through South Auckland and into the Waikato — flat, fast, and not particularly scenic. The landscape opens up as you pass Huntly and the Waikato coal power station on your left. You'll reach Hamilton in about 1.5 hours.

Hamilton (1.5 hours from Auckland)

New Zealand's fourth-largest city straddles the Waikato River. Most people drive straight through, but if you want a break, the Hamilton Gardens (free) are genuinely world-class — themed gardens from Italian Renaissance to Japanese, Chinese to Tropical. Allow an hour. The city also has good cafes along Victoria Street if you need coffee.

The Hobbiton Detour (2 hours from Auckland)

If you're heading to Hobbiton Movie Set, the turnoff is at the small town of Hinuera, south of Hamilton. Follow the signs to Matamata and then to the Shire's Rest cafe where tours depart. Hobbiton tours run approximately every 30 minutes and take 2 hours. Book ahead — this sells out. After Hobbiton, you can continue directly to Rotorua (45 minutes) or loop west to Waitomo first.

The Hobbiton + Waitomo + Rotorua triangle: These three are the North Island's biggest attractions and they're all within 1–2 hours of each other. If you have a full day, do Hobbiton in the morning, drive to Waitomo Caves for an afternoon glowworm tour or black water rafting, then continue to Rotorua for the night. This is one of the best day-trip loops in New Zealand.

Tirau (2 hours from Auckland)

The "Corrugated Iron Capital of New Zealand" — a quirky small town with buildings shaped like animals (look for the giant corrugated iron dog and sheep). Worth a 15-minute photo stop and a coffee at one of the cafes. From here, SH5 branches east toward Rotorua through rolling farmland and native bush.

Arriving in Rotorua (3 hours from Auckland)

The sulphur smell hits you before the town does — that's the geothermal activity. Rotorua sits on top of one of the world's most active volcanic areas and the steam, mud pools and hot springs are everywhere. Check into your hotel, then head to Eat Streat on Tutanekai Street for dinner — it's the main restaurant strip. For a first-night activity, the Polynesian Spa (hot mineral pools on the lakefront, open until 11pm) is hard to beat.
