Speight's is more than a brewery — it's a Dunedin institution. Producing beer from the same Rattray Street site since 1876, it's New Zealand's oldest operational brewery and an essential stop for anyone visiting the city. The brewery sits under five minutes' walk from the Octagon (Dunedin's main square), making it one of the easiest attractions in town to fit into your day. Even if you're not a big beer drinker, this tour is worth your time.
The Tour

The Speight's brewery tour runs for approximately 45 minutes and takes you through the history of the brewery and the full beer-making process. It's a well-paced mix of interactive historical displays and hands-on brewing explanations, complete with all the sights and smells you'd expect from a working brewery. The guides are engaging and clearly passionate about what they do.
But here's the thing most people remember: before you even get inside, there's a tap sticking out of the wall on the street where anyone can fill up with water from Speight's own artesian well — the same water they brew with. Bring a bottle. It's free, it's delicious, and it's a great little detail that sets the tone for the whole experience.
The Tasting Room
After the 45-minute tour, you move into the tasting room for around 30 minutes of sampling. This is where things get fun. You're given access to pour your own from a range of different Speight's varieties — the whole lineup is available. The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff are happy to chat about the different brews, and there's no pressure to rush. It's a genuinely sociable experience and a highlight of the visit.
After the Tour
Speight's Ale House
When you walk out of the brewery, turn right and walk about 50 metres down the street to the Speight's Ale House. It's the natural place to go for dinner after your tour — relaxed, clean, and serving great Southern fare. The Ale House has a warm, comfortable atmosphere and the food is hearty and well-priced. A proper way to round out your "Southern Man" experience.
Practical Tips
- Book ahead: Tours can sell out during peak season (December–February) and cruise ship days. Booking online in advance is recommended.
- Bring a water bottle: Fill it up at the wall tap outside the brewery. It's Speight's own artesian well water and it's genuinely excellent.
- Non-drinkers: The tour itself is interesting regardless of whether you drink beer. Non-alcoholic options are available in the tasting room.
- Allow: About 1.5–2 hours for the full experience (tour + tasting). Add another hour if you're eating at the Ale House.
- Getting there: Walk from the Octagon — it's under five minutes. No need for a car.
- Pair with: The Otago Farmers Market (Saturday mornings) is a 10-minute walk away at the Railway Station.
