If you're in Dunedin on a Saturday morning, the Otago Farmers Market is unmissable. Every week, rain or shine, the car park and railway platform of the magnificent Dunedin Railway Station come alive with high-quality food vendors, chef cooking demonstrations, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to move to Dunedin. It runs from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm and entry is free. If we lived here, this would be our weekly ritual.
The Market
The Otago Farmers Market draws a genuine mix of locals and visitors, and it never feels too packed or overwhelming. Vendors sell everything from fresh seasonal produce and artisan cheese to craft beer, preserves, and handmade breads. The quality across the board is excellent — this is a market where the producers themselves are behind the stalls, and they're happy to talk about what they grow and make.
What to Look For
Dunedin Railway Station
The market gives you the perfect excuse to explore one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings. The Dunedin Railway Station is a magnificent Flemish Renaissance revival building completed in 1906 — and it's just as impressive inside as it is outside.
While you're there, walk through the ground floor and take in the ornate tilework (over 725,000 Royal Doulton porcelain tiles line the floor) and the stunning stained-glass windows. The first floor houses a restaurant, while upstairs you'll find the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame and the Otago Art Society. The famous Taieri Gorge Railway also departs from here — one of the great scenic train journeys in the world.
