How to Use This Planner

Click any destination on the left to add it to your itinerary. The planner automatically calculates driving distances and times between each stop (based on typical NZ road speeds of 75 km/h average including winding roads and stops). Fuel costs default to $3.41/litre (NZ average April 2026) and 8L/100km — both editable in the fuel settings box above so you can match your vehicle and current prices — adjust for your vehicle using our fuel calculator.

Drag stops to reorder your route. The day count uses our recommended minimum nights at each stop. For car hire and campervan rental comparisons, check our guides. Need more detail? See our ready-made 7-day South Island and 14-day itineraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for a New Zealand road trip?

A minimum of 7 days for one island's highlights, or 14–21 days for both islands at a comfortable pace. Use the planner above to see exactly how many days your chosen destinations require. Don't underestimate driving times — NZ roads are scenic but winding.

Should I start in the North or South Island?

Most international flights arrive in Auckland (North Island) or Christchurch (South Island). If you only have 7–10 days, focus on one island. The South Island has more concentrated scenic highlights; the North Island has more cultural and geothermal experiences. The Interislander ferry connects them in 3.5 hours.
