Free & Wild Hot Springs

1. Hot Water Beach — Dig Your Own Pool

Location: Coromandel Peninsula, 2.5 hours from Auckland. Cost: Free (spade hire $10).

One of the most unique beach experiences in the world. At low tide, geothermal water seeps up through the sand on a specific section of the beach. You dig a hole with a spade, and within minutes you're sitting in your own natural hot pool on the beach with waves crashing nearby. Timing is critical — it only works within 2 hours either side of low tide. Arrive early for the best spots. Spades can be hired from the surf shop on the hill above the beach.

2. Kerosene Creek — Waterfall Hot Pool in the Bush

Location: 30 minutes south of Rotorua. Cost: Free.

A natural hot stream flowing through native bush with a small waterfall that acts as a warm shower. The water temperature sits around 30–40°C year-round. It's rustic — there is a basic changing shed and nothing else. There's a sulphur smell from the geothermal activity, but it fades fast. One of the most popular free hot pools in NZ, so it can get busy on weekends. Best visited on a weekday morning.

3. Spa Thermal Park (Otumuheke Stream) — Taupō

Location: 25-minute walk from Taupō town centre. Cost: Free.

A geothermal stream that flows into the Waikato River, creating a natural mixing zone where you can find your perfect temperature — hot stream on one side, cool river on the other. Look for steam near the shore. Easily accessible, family-friendly, and stunning in any weather. The walk along the river to get there is beautiful in itself.

4. Kaitoke Hot Springs — Great Barrier Island

Location: Great Barrier Island, 30-minute flight or 4.5-hour ferry from Auckland. Cost: Free.

A 45-minute bush walk through native forest leads to natural hot pools dammed at a fork in the Kaitoke Creek. Surrounded by low-hanging trees and smooth rocks, it feels genuinely untouched. The walk is pushchair-friendly. Great Barrier Island itself is off-grid — no mains electricity, limited phone coverage, genuine remoteness.

Commercial Hot Pools & Spas

5. Polynesian Spa — Rotorua

Location: Lakefront, Rotorua. Cost: From $50 NZD.

The classic NZ hot pool experience. 28 hot and cool pools fed by two natural mineral springs — the acidic Rachel Spring (good for aching muscles) and the alkaline Priest Spring (nourishes skin). The lakefront pools overlooking Lake Rotorua at dusk are genuinely special. Day spa treatments available. This is the hot pool most international visitors experience and it delivers.

7. Onsen Hot Pools — Queenstown

Location: Arthurs Point, 10 minutes from Queenstown. Cost: From $75 NZD per person.

Private cedar-lined hot tubs cantilevered over the Shotover River canyon. The views are jaw-dropping — sheer cliff walls, the river far below, mountains in every direction. Each tub is completely private. A premium experience and one of the most Instagrammed hot pools in the country. Book well ahead, especially for sunset sessions. Day spa treatments available.

8. Taupō DeBretts Hot Springs

Location: Taupō. Cost: From $30 NZD adult.

Natural geothermal hot pools, warm mineral pools, hydroslides for kids, and private pools. Family-friendly with good facilities. Open daily. The hot pools stay open rain or shine — locals say the best time is during rain, when the cool drops on your face contrast with the hot water. Campground on site if you want to wake up and soak before breakfast.

9. Wai Ariki Hot Springs — Rotorua

Location: Lakefront, Rotorua. Cost: From $65 NZD.

The newest luxury spa in Rotorua, opened in recent years. Contemporary architecture inspired by Māori healing practices. Multiple pools at different temperatures, all fed by natural geothermal water. The design is stunning — a genuine step up from the traditional Rotorua spa experience. Premium price but a premium product.

10. Tekapo Springs — Mackenzie Country

Location: Lake Tekapo, South Island. Cost: From $32 NZD adult.

Hot pools with views of the turquoise lake and the Southern Alps. The real magic is the night-time stargazing soak — Lake Tekapo is in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve and the stars from the hot pool are extraordinary. In winter, there's also a snow tube park and ice skating rink. Combine with the Mt John Observatory stargazing tour.

11. Maruia Hot Springs — Lewis Pass

Location: Lewis Pass, between Christchurch and the West Coast. Cost: From $40 NZD.

A thermal eco-wellness retreat surrounded by the Southern Alps and native beech forest. The outdoor pools look out across a river valley — genuinely remote and peaceful. Accommodation on site (hotel rooms and glamping pods). Restaurant and cafe. An excellent overnight stop if you're driving the Christchurch to Nelson route via Lewis Pass.

12. The Lost Spring — Coromandel

Location: Whitianga, Coromandel Peninsula. Cost: From $55 NZD adult.

Premium adults-only thermal pools in a tropical garden setting. The water rises from 667 metres underground, having spent 16,000 years filtering through rock — it emerges pristine and mineral-rich. Multiple pools at different temperatures (32–41°C). Poolside cocktails and food delivered to your lounger. Day spa treatments. Not cheap, but a genuine treat-yourself experience.
