Flight Tips

When & How to Book

Best Time to Book

Book 3–6 months ahead for peak season (December–February). For shoulder season travel (March–May, September–November), 6–8 weeks ahead often yields good fares.

From the USA

Air New Zealand flies direct from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and New York to Auckland. From the East Coast, connections via Los Angeles are common. Flight time: 12–17 hours.

From the UK

No direct flights from the UK. Common routes go via Singapore (Singapore Airlines), Dubai (Emirates), Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific) or Los Angeles. Total journey: 24–30 hours.

From Australia

The shortest international flights to NZ. Sydney to Auckland is 3 hours. Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and other cities have direct services to Auckland, Queenstown and Christchurch.

Fly into Auckland, out of Queenstown: The most popular and efficient NZ itinerary. Fly in to Auckland, road trip down the North Island, cross to the South Island by ferry or plane, road trip to Queenstown and fly home from there. This "open jaw" routing avoids backtracking and is often similarly priced to a return fare.
Airport Wi-Fi tip: You'll use public Wi-Fi in airports, hostels and cafés throughout your trip. A VPN keeps your banking, passwords and personal data safe on unsecured networks. NordVPN works well across NZ and covers up to 10 devices.
