How to Use This Generator

Pick your travel month, the regions you'll visit, what you plan to do, and your travel style. The generator creates a personalised packing list based on NZ's famously variable weather, regional conditions, and your activities. You can check items off as you pack, then print or save the list.

For more detail on each item, see our full NZ packing list guide. Our weather guide covers month-by-month conditions, and the seasonal guide has more on what to expect in each month.

The Most Important NZ Packing Rules

1. Always bring a waterproof jacket. Even in summer. NZ weather changes fast and you WILL get rained on at some point.

2. Layer, don't bulk. Two or three light layers beat one heavy coat for NZ's variable conditions. Merino wool is the local specialty for a reason.

3. Sun protection is non-negotiable. NZ has one of the highest UV indexes in the world. You can burn in 10 minutes on a summer day. SPF50+ sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are essential.

4. Proper walking shoes. Whether you're doing the Tongariro Crossing or just exploring Queenstown's waterfront, good shoes are the single biggest contributor to a good trip.

5. Biosecurity matters. Don't pack food, plant material or dirty outdoor gear. Declare everything at customs — fines are steep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the one thing I shouldn't forget for New Zealand?

A waterproof jacket and SPF50+ sunscreen. NZ weather can turn in an hour regardless of season, and the UV strength is significantly higher than Europe or North America. You can buy sunscreen here but it's expensive — bring your own.

Do I need to bring hiking boots to New Zealand?

If you plan to do any Great Walks, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, or multi-day tramps, yes — proper hiking boots with ankle support are essential. For casual day walks, good sneakers or trail runners work. Kathmandu and Macpac (NZ brands) sell boots locally if you prefer to buy on arrival.

What power adapter do I need for NZ?

New Zealand uses Type I plugs — the same as Australia. Two angled flat pins. If you're coming from the UK, Europe, North America or Asia, you'll need a universal adapter. You can buy cheap ones at Auckland Airport or The Warehouse stores once you arrive.

Can I buy hiking gear in New Zealand?

Yes — NZ has excellent outdoor stores. Kathmandu, Macpac and Bivouac Outdoor are the main chains, and all have frequent 40–60% off sales. Hunting & Fishing and Torpedo7 also stock hiking gear. Prices are reasonable by NZ standards. Many outdoor towns (Wānaka, Queenstown, National Park Village) have hire shops too.
