The Christchurch Gondola is one of those attractions that genuinely delivers on the promise. You ride a cable car up Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills and at the top you get sweeping 360-degree views across the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps, down into Lyttelton Harbour, and across the Pacific Ocean. It's one of the best ways to get your bearings when you first arrive in Christchurch — and on a clear day, the views are spectacular. We've visited a few times now, including with a young child, and here's what you need to know.

Our Experience

It was a fine sunny autumn day in Christchurch, so off to the Gondola we went. The Gondola is about 15 minutes' drive from the centre of Christchurch, sitting on Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills — the rim of a long-extinct volcano. The car park is large and free, so parking isn't a problem. Bus number 8 also runs directly from the Christchurch Bus Interchange to the base station if you don't have a car.

At the base station you walk in and buy your ticket. The base station is fully wheelchair accessible and the staff are friendly and helpful. Once you have your ticket you head straight through the doors and onto the gondola — each cabin seats up to four people and is private to your group. On a weekday outside of school holidays there was no queue at all.

💡
Tip for families with buggies: Don't try to get a large pushchair into the gondola cabin on your own. The cabins aren't huge. The staff will stop the gondola to help, but in hindsight it's easier to carry small children and leave the buggy at the base. The summit station has an elevator for accessibility, but there are a lot of stairs between levels.

The ride up takes about 10 minutes and is smooth and relaxing as the views of Christchurch gradually open up below you. At the summit station, you arrive straight into the gift shop (of course). Beyond that is the Christchurch Discovery Ride — a free ride-through experience that takes you through the history of the Canterbury region in about six minutes. It's like a small-scale theme park dark ride and it's surprisingly well done. Good for kids and adults.

At the top there's an outdoor walkway around the summit complex that gives you the full 360-degree panorama: Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean stretching up towards Kaikoura, Banks Peninsula, Lyttelton Harbour, Lake Ellesmere, and across the Canterbury Plains to the snow-capped Southern Alps. There's great reading material on interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. It's genuinely impressive on a clear day.

The Red Rock Café at the summit is a decent spot for a coffee or light lunch with a view. Not fine dining, but perfectly good for what it is.

If you like walking, several nature tracks start from the summit — from a short 15-minute loop to longer walks that take you all the way down to the base station or across the Port Hills. On a sunny day, combining the gondola ride with a walk is an excellent way to spend a few hours.

The Verdict

The Christchurch Gondola is worth doing, especially on your first visit to Christchurch. It gives you a fantastic overview of the region and helps you understand the geography — where the mountains are, where the harbour is, and what Banks Peninsula looks like from above. It's particularly good if you're about to drive south or over to Akaroa, because you'll have seen the landscape from above first.

⚠️
Peak season warning: In summer (November–March), especially when cruise ships are in port, queues at the Gondola can be over an hour. Go early in the morning or on a weekday if possible. Pre-booking online doesn't skip the queue — you still wait in the same line.
